 Encad VinylJet 36: Encad has finally gotten back into the game with a new plotter that is truly cutting edge. I don’t know if this was on the drawing board before Kodak swallowed them up or is courtesy of Kodak’s famous engineering. Either way, it is the most radical new technology I have seen in a while.
The ink is sprayed onto uncoated media using regular cartridges (vinyl, photo paper & fabric). The ink is then “cured” using a powerful infrared lamp. When it comes out, it's practically an indestructible image. The ink is incredibly scratch resistant; at one point, I had to bring out a knife to get a nick in the image. The ink is actually waterproof –- none of that weak resistant disclaimer. Although personally unable to test their claims, the image is UV resistant for up to two years unlaminated. Now here is the amazing part -- the output looks good. The image is crisp and the colors have plenty of pop.
So far, the VinylJet is only available in 36”, but is priced at a reasonable $12-14,000. The media is uncoated and inexpensive. The plotter appears to operate similar to an inkjet plotter. The only drawback seems to be throughput speed. This will make a great 2nd plotter for any shop to crank out finished outdoor products.

We’re rolling with the changes::
In the last few newsletters I have discussed the changes going around in the industry. We at CAD Supplies are definitely not staying still in this sea of change. We have always handled graphic and outdoor media. We are committed to being the top supplier of graphic paper and banner material in Central Texas. Our most recent addition is Krystina Mayhew (see employee profile). Her background as a graphic consultant gives her the knowledge and expertise to know how everything works together. Her strength lies in her ability to help choose the media that will best do the job.
We have already doubled the size of our warehouse and tripled the graphic products inventory. Krystina finds new and exciting products every week to add to the line. The new products are tested in house on our HP5000 plotter. After her rigorous testing, we know the paper will work for you!
I am very excited about this new direction. While cad papers will always be our bread and butter, the graphic supplies will fulfill my goal to be the best plotter supplies provider possible. If you have a project that requires special attention, or if you currently do large-scale graphics, give us a try. You will be impressed with our new abilities!!

Krystina Mayhew is heading our new graphics department. Before joining CAD Supplies in May 2003, Krystina ran her own graphics consulting business. I had previously met Krystina at Outreach Health Services where she was responsible for their in-house graphic designs. She has many years of both creative and technical expertise.
As many of you who have met her might have guessed, she was an athlete in college, staring on the basketball and soccer teams. Following the trend with my people, she too has an artistic talent. No, she doesn’t play in a band, but she is a photographer. She owned her own gallery in New Mexico where she displayed her own work before coming to Austin.
In the three months since joining us, she has really kick started our graphics business. Please make use of her talents for your graphic jobs.

 Gary Hays
Gary Hays is one of the good guys in our industry who has fallen on hard times. Many of you have had your HP plotters serviced by his expert hands. Last month, Gary had a serious car accident returning home from work. His car rolled multiple times and he had to be life flighted to Breckenridge. His injuries are severe. We are hoping for a full recovery, but his prognosis is still unknown.
What we do know is that he will be out of work for an extended period of time. Arrangements have been made to cover his work, so please be understanding. Unfortunately, Gary did not have health insurance. His house is also being modified due to his injuries. He will undergo rehabilitation in San Antonio.
