A guide for the CAD industry...
CADworld

  Jokes
(borrowed from the Internet)

You know you live in Austin if:

  • Your co-worker tells you he/she has eight body piercings, but none are visible.
  • You never bother looking at the Capital Metro schedule because you know the drivers have never seen it.
  • You have a very strong opinion about where your coffee beans are grown and can taste the difference between Sumatran and Ethiopian.
  • You are thinking of taking a continuing education evening class but you can’t decide among yoga, aromatherapy, conversational Mandarin, and/or building your own website.
  • A man walks down the drag in full leather regalia complete with Speedo under chaps ... and you didn’t even notice.
  • You keep a list of companies to boycott in your wallet.

 I have a confession:

Many of you might remember my original newsletters.  You know, printed on actual paper and sent though the US Post Office.  Well, four years ago I went on a hiatus due to the increased demands on my time by our first, and then second child.  Well, not this time my friends!  Savannah Brooke was born November 22nd, and mother and baby are doing just fine!  Personally, I will be taking time off from work to assist in my family in any and all ways.

I have knocked out a few things early.  If all goes well, our third edition of the CAD Supplies calendar will be arriving soon.  I trust that while I am out my people will keep the lights on.  I know I left the place in good hands, but seriously, let me know if they aren't answering the phone, okay!?  I’ll be thinking of you at all hours of the night.  I’ll be up anyway.

Until next year,

Chris Epstein

  Employee Profile

Jacob BassJacob Bass

Many of you on the north side of town have already heard from Jacob, the rest soon will.  He is our new Account Representative for the north.  I have finally managed to get a good, loyal Longhorn into the fold.  Just don’t get him started about football!  He is a rabid fan.

Jacob worked his way through UT with a tour of duty with UPS.  At the tender age of 25 he supervised 72 UPS drivers.  I can’t go anywhere with him without seeing one of "his" drivers in a brown truck.  Have no fear though, our paper will still arrive undamaged and on time.  He won’t be doing deliveries.

Jacob doesn’t have a lick of musical talent, but he does have a talent for writing.  Perhaps he can write songs for our in-house band.  He does put his English major to good use as the sports beat writer for Insite Magazine.  He doesn’t get paid much, but is quite amusing nonetheless.

Jacob will continue the tradition of providing the excellent personal service expected from CAD Supplies.  Please give him a hearty welcome and buy something so he can eat!!!

Company Profile:  SRI Sports

If you’ve picked up the Austin Business Journal in the last year, you’ve no doubt seen SRI Sports name splashed across its pages.  Nestled away on Leander Drive in Leander, SRI has reigned since 1984 as the undisputed champion of artificial playing surfaces.

The subsidiary of American Sports Products Group Inc. (ASPG) makes and installs synthetic and natural grass playing fields, tracks, tennis surfaces, and gymnasium floors.  Since the 1966 creation of AstroTurf® debuted here in Texas at the Astrodome, alternative playing surfaces have been big business.  How big?  Well, from 1993 to 2002 ASPG saw its revenues double from $10 to $20 million.

Now that I have your attention, what has made this giant of the turf so successful?  According to the charter located on the SRI website www.srisports.com: "[their] beliefs are simple: start- to- finish service, on time delivery and customer support every step of the way."

This start to finish service includes design, construction, installation and maintenance of artificial surfaces.  The CAD department handles the design as they pump plan after plan out of their Xerox 3040, while letting HP 1050’s handle the presentation and color work.

SRI Sports has had many names.  Initially, the company began in 1984 as Southwest Track builders, Inc.  In 1990, they became Southwest Recreational Industries, Inc. with yet another expansion now including the complete construction process of track & field as well as indoor and outdoor tennis surfaces.

SRI has recently resurfaced the fields for Air Force, Navy, Ole Miss, New Orleans Saints, and Buffalo Bills; not to mention the practice facility for reigning national champs, Ohio State.  The Metro Dome, home of the Minnesota Vikings, is on the schedule for next year.

Why do all of the high profile teams choose SRI?  Quite simply, because they have AstroPlay®, a new polyethylene playing surface that has taken the place of AstroTurf®.  AstroPlay® is "much softer, looks like and plays like grass," said HR manager Beatrice Schreyer.  It is not a nylon-knitted product like the short abrasive AstroTurf®.  This new material has little rubber pellets tufted into the fabric of the lifelike 2" blades of AstroPlay®.

From a fan’s perspective AstroPlay® is grass.  Next time the Bills, Vikings, or Saints are on your TV, see if you can tell.  You can be sure the players can.
