Building an Ark
We here at CAD Supplies have been busy building an Ark due to the recent rains. If I had wanted to live where it is 100 degrees and rainy, then I would have stayed in Houston. This plethora of rain has not seemed to slow you guys down much. I guess there is not much golf going on!
These days, summer does not seem to be a slowdown time. We have certainly been busy with the new HP Designjet plotters. The reception has gone great and they are flying out the door. HP was truly impressed with the turnout as well as the 15 (and counting) plotters sold from the show. It is always great to impress the big guys and I think we have done that. Thanks to all who made the show such a success.
The following clients won door prizes. It was so crazy in the beginning, I am certain I have missed a few people:
- Jon Carey (Landmark Designs)
~ Seiko Watch
- Quana Childs (TX Historical Commission)
~ HP Photosmart Camera
- Cole Hairston (Hairston Photography)
~ HP Photosmart Camera
- Royce Zook (Zook Photography)
~ Apple iPod
- Randy Smith (Smith LTD)
~ HP Service Contract
I believe we have also printed out all of the Fine Art Prints that we owed. Three plotters running full time were needed to keep up with demand!
I trust everyone is having a fun summer -- keep up the good work.

July 2007 -- Top 22
|
|
The June 2007 issue of Texas Construction magazine ranks the biggest project starts in the state in their annual rankings of top construction projects. Eight of the top 22 are in Austin.
Congratulations to our clients on the list: Graeber, Simons and Cowans at #3 and Page Sutherland Page at #6.
- #1 The new Dallas Cowboys' stadium in Arlington. It's Jerry Jones, of course.
- #2 The Fort Bliss Expansion Program in El Paso. Hensel Phelps of Austin is one of the prime contractors on the project.
- #3 The AMD Lone Star campus in Oak Hill, outside of Austin. The $190 million dollar project, set for completion in January 2008, consists of four office buildings, three garages and one commons building. Graeber, Simmons and Cowan was selected as the project's architectural firm. You have to read about the project and the innovative plan for this site. The link is at the end of this article.
- #4 The Methodist Hospital Outpatient Care Center in Houston.
- #5 The Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine; a 450,000 sq. ft. indoor water park resort.
Two Austin projects tie for the #6 spot, and again Hensel Phelps is the prime contractor:
- #6 The new Samsung Austin Fab2, headed by the Austin architectural firm of PageSutherlandPage. A $150 million dollar project has been completed with a building footprint that covers an area the size of nine football fields, the facility is more than four times the square footage of the original fab that Hensel Phelps completed in 1997.
- #6 The UT DKR Texas Memorial Stadium expansion. At $150 million, it will raise the overall seating capacity to over 90,000, surpassing Texas A&M's Kyle Field as the largest college football stadium in Texas.
- #10 The Domain in Austin. The $105 million project's prime contractor is the Beck Group of Austin.
- #14 Leander ISD #4 High School. American Constructors of Austin is the General Contractor and Fields and Associates, Austin is the architect.
- #16 The 44 story Austin 360 Condominiums with J. E. Dunn Construction, Austin acting as the General Contractor.
- #19 The UT Dell Pediatric Research Institute, located on the site of the former Mueller Airport property.
- #22 The Monarch, another high-rise luxury apartment building to be built in Austin. The tower's unique building foundation includes piers that are as large as 72 inches in diameter and reach depths of 140 feet. The building superstructure is a cast-in-place "flat plate" post tensional slab. It is scheduled to be completed in May of 2008.

Seen any TSA PUBS flying around lately?
OK, they aren't a new type of UFO (maybe, Private Universe Blasting Systems) and they don't quite fly around. So are you familiar with the Texas Society of Architect publications? TSA publishes a number of publications designed for members and general public. You are probably most familiar with Texas Architect magazine and The Shape of Texas. Here are some additional publications that might be of interest to you and your colleagues.
Texas Architect
Winner of many awards for both graphic design and editorial excellence, Texas Architect features recently completed projects by Texas architects and other newsworthy information relative to the practice of architecture in Texas. TA is published bi-monthly and is available to the general public by subscription as well as at select bookstores.
CheckSet
Published bi-monthly and mailed to all members, TSA's newsletter keeps the membership informed about individual member's professional achievements and personal accomplishments. Each edition also includes summaries of TSA Board actions, news about TSA's government affairs efforts, and updates on other TSA activities. Rounding out each edition's content is a table showing year-to-date contributions by each chapter to the Texas Architects Committee and a list of members who have made annual pledges.
TSA Annual Report
Published as a membership benefit, the Annual Report reviews TSA's activities over the previous year. Along with a year-end fiscal statement, the report highlights TSA's three areas of focus - Advocacy, Community, and Communications. Other sections feature information on membership, legislative lobbying efforts, updates on TSA's political action committee, and a summary of scholarships awarded through the Texas Architectural Foundation. The report is mailed to TSA members each March.
TSA Handbook
Available to members free of charge and to non-members for $50, the Society's annual directory includes contact information for all 5,000 TSA members along with other material specific to the practice of architecture in Texas. The TSA Handbook is published each May as a supplement to Texas Architect. To order copies, contact the circulation manager at circulation@texasarchitect.org.
The Shape of Texas
The Shape of Texas is a radio program that seeks to broadcast through NPR-affiliated stations vividly descriptive information about contemporary and historical architecture and places which, now or will in time, define the Texas culture and heritage. The program hopes to pique the listeners' interest and lead them to look at our built environment with a fresh and knowing eye. This online archive includes mp3 audio of Volumes 1 thru 16 and accompanying photographs for selected episodes of Volumes 1 thru 16. Use the search tool below to locate episodes to listen to, or use the Episode Index for a complete listing of all The Shape of Texas tracks. The program's mission is to raise public awareness about the value of architecture within our communities and to demonstrate how and what we build profoundly affects the way Texans live, work, and play.
Texas' Best Places
This special supplement to Texas Architect was published in the September/October 2002 edition of TA and features articles that describe the essential qualities of the 25 places judged to be the "best" in the state. While the high quality of architecture was important in their selection, the 25 places exemplify how one or more designers have assembled a group of structures that have had significant social, cultural, or economic impact on their communities.
If interested in membership or more info, go to the Texas Society of Architects/AIA web site at www.texasarchitect.gov.
