Monitor Calibration

Color management starts in the design stage. I can't tell you how important monitor calibration is, but I am going to sure try! When looking at your monitor, you are seeing colors in RGB. After the design work is finished and you are printing your proof or the final product, it prints in CMYK. Designers need the peace of mind knowing that what they created will print out the way they designed it. The only way to fix this problem is to properly calibrate the monitor so you are seeing colors in CMYK. This tool is the fast and easy solution to that problem. Remember the saying garbage in, garbage out? Well if your monitor is not calibrated, you have no chance of attaining good color matches. Calibrating your monitor is not something you do just once and then forget about. If it was, we would do it for you and spare you this article! As the monitor ages, the screen changes colors and intensity.
A monitor should be recalibrated every three (3) months or less to maintain an accurate rendition. THAT is why you should own this tool and get into the good habit of color calibration. This is just the first step into color management, but it is an easy (5 minute) step that can really improve your work and reduce your headaches!

Things getting back to normal? Let's hope NOT!!!
If this hasn't been a crazy summer for you, just wait as it may not be done yet!!! I currently have my guys finishing the last touches on our Ark. Now all we have to do is get us two of everything.
It feels like the momentum has shifted a bit. For the last couple of years Austin has piled through everything and maintained a very busy workload. For the first time in a while we have seen the daily paper business go into its "normal" summer slow down. Now don't get me wrong -- I can live with this normal -- we are still doing pretty well!
After the splendor of the Bob Bullock Museum, we decided that our own little showroom needed upgrading. I want to give special thanks to Robert Smith for heading the project. Robert is an artist by love, so it might have been a bit of overkill, but we had him armed with a paintbrush! With everyone's help the results are truly spectacular. We had our client Truform Metals (who bought a T1100) custom cut ceiling tiles for us. The total package really looks good if I can brag a little!
After we completed this project some of the guys are asking when we will upgrade our server ... not so sure about that one. So the demo room is stocked with plotters, the warehouse is full of paper, and we have service techs running around like crazy. What is more normal than that!?

The New "Half-Mile Club""
The Burj Dubai ("Dubai Tower") is a mega skyscraper currently under construction in the "New Downtown" of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in the Middle East. Although not yet complete, it is currently the tallest high-rise building in the world. When it is completed, it will be the tallest man-made structure in the world by far. Scheduled for occupancy in 2009, the building is part of a huge development. Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP (SOM) of Chicago is the lead architect, structural engineer and mechanical engineer of the Burj.
As of 21 July 2007, the tower's developers reported the Burj Dubai's height as 512.1 meters (1,680.1 ft), with 141 completed floors, surpassing the Taipei 101 [509.2 m (1,671 ft)] as the tallest high-rise building in the world. The projected final height of the Burj Dubai is officially being kept a secret due to competition; however, speculation has suggested a height of greater than 900 meters (more than 2,900 ft), around 195+ floors.
 Burj Dubai will be the tallest structure in the world in all four of the criteria listed by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). The council measures height to the structural top, the highest occupied floor, to the top of the roof, and to the tip of the spire, pinnacle, antenna, mast or flag pole. The tip of the spire can be seen by a person 95 Km (60 miles) away, and a person in the Observation Deck can see as far away as 80 Km (50 miles).
The building, more like a massive superstructure, will feature the world's fastest elevators, rising descending at 18 m/s (65 km/h, 40 mph). Lifts, according to skyscraper archiect Henry Feiner of Harry Seidler and Associates, are one of the major constraints on skyscrapers. "If you try to put enough lifts to service 150-200 floors, you'll end up with no floor space on every floor. It's all taken up by lift shafts," he says. The solution - although time comsuming for those on the upper floors - is to design the building as one skyscraper stacked on top of one another. It becomes a series of 50-story buildings stacked on top of each other where you have express shuttle lift taking you to sky lobbies – a platform at the 50-story level – and then you start all over again."
The tower is being constructed by South Korean giant Samsung Corporation. More than one third of all the construction cranes in the world are currently in use at this site. Over 45,000 cubic meters (59,000 cubic yards) of concrete, weighing more than 110,000 tons (120,000 short tons) were used to construct the concrete and steel foundation, which features 192 piles buried more than 50 m (164 ft) deep.
The Burj Dubai has been designed to be the centerpiece of a large-scale, mixed-use development, 500-acre downtown development that will include 30,000 homes, nine hotels 0.03 square kilometers (0.01 mile) of parkland, at least 19 residential towers, the Dubai Mall, and the 0.12 km (0.05 mile) man-made Burj Dubai Lake. The complete 2 km (1 mile) development will cost about US $20 billion. It is being billed as the most prestigious square kilometer on earth!
The whole of floor 200 has just been sold to a private bidder for $4,527,975 US dollars, which is not so expensive, considering the hype. However, keep in mind that the top floor is going to be only 8 meters wide. It also gives a hint that the building might exceed the 200 floor limit.
