A guide for the CAD industry...

  ITT Technical Institute Needs Teachers!

ITT Technical Institute

It is not a well known fact, but I sit on the Advisory Board for ITT Technical Institute. Hopefully I earn the free lunch! Well the call has gone out for teachers and I thought -- I know some folks that can teach CAD drafting in their sleep. (I guess the hope is that the students are awake!).

A couple of instructors have left this semester for parts unknown. ITT is looking for adjunct instructors to teach a couple of nights a week in the CDD program. The classes start March 10th in a few areas including Civil Drafting Tech, Materials & Manufacturing Processes, and Architectural Drafting … and possibly others.

Educating our young minds is vital to maintaining a vibrant economy. Not only is it giving back to your community, but I think they will pay you for the privilege as well! If interested, please contact Rick Whitlock (Chair, School of Drafting and Design) at 512-467-6800 or rwhitlock@itt-tech.edu.

 Whoops, I Missed Again!

Okay -- true confession time. I meant to put out a newsletter in December. I even wrote the letter and everything. Funny thing, I got so busy with the holidays and end of year stuff that I forgot to turn it all over to my trusty newsletter guy, Gordon Merrill. No problem -- I can always send it out for January. Shucks -- I hope you are reading this in February!

This has been a truly busy time. I don’t care what the papers say, Austin is busy. As long as we don’t read the paper everything should be fine! We did count all of our inventory and still had time for an office party. You might notice some of my guys running around on cold days in their new CAD Supplies jackets. Pretty snazzy, huh!?

We broke our own record from last year on the calendars. This year's count was over 2000! Doug, Mike, and I have worn out some serious shoe leather passing all of those out! This year we let our delivery drivers get into the fun. It's not surprising that Tony and Marlon seemed to enjoy playing Santa Claus. If you haven’t gotten your calendar yet -- Please ORDER SOMETHING! Our driver can then hook you up. If you are trying to milk an extra -- good luck as they are in high demand!

2007 was the best year ever for us. Our graphics side has finally started to take off. We have added the Roland & HP Solvent line to our arsenal in the last year. The new HP plotters Z6100, Z2100 and Z3100 really invigorated things. I can’t imagine a better year for equipment sales. Our Seikos are becoming the dominate laser plotter in Austin with over 40 units placed! HP introduced their new line-up of plotters and then gave away huge rebate money to entice you guys to upgrade. Our boring, old bread-n-butter CAD paper did okay I guess; there are a lot less trees in the world after this year!

We could not have accomplished any of this without our outstanding clients. Our vendors are amazed at the large and loyal following we have. They don’t know the half of it. Without the faith and support of you guys, we would never have been successful with our new ventures Equipment & Graphics. I hope we can justify the loyalty and foster even more of all this good stuff!

Let’s go out and enjoy the New Year!

Making Good from Bad

Doesn’t it seem like the majority of our days are filled with as much "busyness" as "business!?"

And then every once in a while, you learn what you initially thought was a bad thing, turns to good and becomes a true blessing to others. We learned about one of those blessings from one of our clients, Shoreline Church.

We started selling a new product last year -- foam board, (A Good Thing), which has a ridiculously high rate of damage from shipping. (A Bad Thing). It’s either the shipping gorrillas or the nocturnal warehouse gremlins are nightly bending and crushing the edges of each carton of foam board!!!

KidsChurchAnyway, we were eventually able to give the damaged product to one of clients, Shoreline Church. Jody Reynolds, Director of KidsChurch, wrote us a letter to tell us how the damaged foam board and papers decorated their young children’s classrooms and created props and scenes for productions. They made clubhouses, baseball fields, a castle and a complete jungle. They topped it off with a wagon train and an Ice Age 'frozen' with white paper. Sounds like fun doesn’t it!?

KidsChurchSo when you have the chance to reflect on the "busyness" of your days, take a moment to look back or forward and see how many opportunities we have to turn bad things into good blessings throughout our lives!
